The most popular antagonist in many fairytale, fantasy and adventure stories – the wicked witch brews potions and casts spells to heroes or heroines and charms people and other beings to follow her will.
In many modern fantasy stories, witches are popularly described to be a wicked or evil, ugly woman dressed in a gloomy and dark clothing. They also are usually described of having a black cat as a pet and riding on a magical broom which can fly. Just like other supernatural beings, witches are popularly depicted to possess magical powers or are capable of shape-shifting to wolves, boar, bats or other animals. They have many assorted potions and spells which they use to charm other people or even animals. In many stories they often live alone in forests where no one would go or would transform to a normal townsfolk so they can mingle with the crowd during the day.
Witchcraft is the practice or the use of these supernatural or magical powers. Historically, witchcraft was popularly associated with cult worship of evil beings or devils – with its alleged practitioners or commonly called witches are being suppressed particularly by the Christian churches for they are believed to harm people and are treated bad or evil. However in most recent times and modern urban legends, witchcraft is sometimes associated with the good – in which it has powers of healing and are used to counter the evil practices of the same supernatural phenomenon.
Just like vampires, monsters, skeletons, witches are also popular in Halloween. In modern society, they are a popular subject not only in literary arts like the popular fairytale stories and other novels but also in visual arts – many concept arts of different depictions of witches can be seen. Though usually portrayed as a wicked and ugly or old woman, witches in digital artworks are also being portrayed to be benevolent, beautiful, or a total opposite to the ones being portrayed in many books or novels.
