Commonly depicted as a deity with immense strength and wields a hammer that bash foes like thunder, Thor is the most prominent god in Norse mythology because of his heroic stories and adventures.
Though popularly known as the god of thunder in Norse mythology, he is also associated and described to be the god of lightning, storm, oak tree, and a benevolent god that protects mankind. Comparable to the Greek god of thunder Zeus, Thor is one of the strongest and most powerful gods in traditional Scandinavian and Viking folklore and legends. Thor is a popular and idolized figure in ancient Germanic and Scandinavian peoples because of his legendary exploits and fierce battles against monsters and his heroic stories of the events of Ragnarok. In popular culture, he is present in the popular Marvel comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby as a superhero who defies evil. Thor continues to influence not only in ancient times but today’s generations as well. He is a popular figure of justice and benevolence and a reference and inspiration to many visual arts specifically in digital media.
