Often depicted as a female who wields swords or spears and wearing battle armor, Valkyries sweep above battlefields with their beautiful wings or flying chariots and choose the ones who will die in battle.
In Norse mythology, they are the hosts to the gods and choose who will be slain in a battle – taking half of the dead to the goddess Freyja’s afterlife field Fólkvangr and the other chosen half will be brought to the afterlife hall of the slain Valhalla and become einherjar. There are many stories as well of certain Valkyries as the main subject. Just like in Greek mythology, Valkyries are also depicted as enemies or allies to humans. As they possess supernatural and god-like powers, Valkyries are the most important characters in many fantasy science fiction stories as well as video games.
