We take a look at another list of photos from this series with the most famous temple in the world and the most often told of its legendary stories of all time – the Shaolin Temple in China.
The Shaolin Monastery or Shaolin Temple is an ancient temple in Henan Province in China with a long and deep history stretching from its foundation in the 5th century to this day. The word Shaolin comes from “Shao” which refers to Mount Shaoshi where the temple is located and “Lin” which means “forest”. The Shaolin Temple and the famous shaolin monks are yet the most often told in many media today of its legends and stories – appearing in countless movie adaptations, inspired many video games, being told in Chinese folklore and legends for hundreds of years and many more. The Pagoda Forest within the monastery were inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2010. Its influence and major impact not only to modern Chinese culture but to the whole world cannot be doubted The Shaolin monastery has long been associated to martial arts specifically the famous Shaolin Kung Fu which has inspired millions to follow the discipline.
